Caleb

I took another sip of whiskey as I watched the mindless souls laugh around me.

Another day, another journey.

I turned to see my colleague staring at me.

Long day huh?

Not exactly.

Hey BB, another order of a screwdriver please-. This world is collapsing and we’re here drinking. What a time.

It’s just changing-

For the worse. Too many stubborn souls.

Haven’t they always been?

When will we get our turn? Where’s that balance?

I stopped listening to what Kyla was saying. She can go on for hours. Thankfully both our phones went off.

Alright I’m on it.

She and I took one last slip of our drinks and headed out.

A man screamed, while being dragged off.

Damn another one. She shrugged. More work for us, I guess.

Yeah. Maybe.

Hey, can I ride with you?

I looked at her. How the hell did you get here?

Hitchhiked.

You know that’s illegal.

The hitchhiking or the ride?

What type of car was it?

Does it matter? Sigh. An awesome motorcycle.

Motorcycles are illegal, are you trying to get killed?

If it gets me out of this job quicker- Omg dude you seriously ride around in that?

She laughed at my bike.

At least I don’t go around with neon sign saying take me.

That was only once.

I sighed. Come on, they don’t like when we’re late.

She sat on the front of my bike. I miss my car. It seems like forever ago. When I was a different person, had a different life.

RayRay you dog!

I snapped out of my thoughts.

What’s up ya’ll?

Another day, another soul.

We went into the building. A man gave us each a paper with a person’s name and address.

Is this our last one? She asked, clearly annoyed.

The man just stared at us.

It is always this way. We come in, they give us a paper with a person’s information and we return the lucky bastard to the source. Wash and repeat.

Who did you get?

Some chick again.

And you Caleb?

I opened it and looked down. There was nothing. It was empty.

Hello Caleb, who did you get?

Was this my moment? Was my task finally complete? I stuffed the paper into my pocket.

Just another girl, that’s all. I lied.

Aw man, another girl? what is going on?

I know, right? We save as many as we can but-.

Something caught my eye.

Hey guys I gotta go.

Oh, okay see ya.

Yeah see ya.

I got on my bike and rode away quickly. The light faded as I got closer to it.

Hey there you are.

And there she was the recent woman I was charged with – Sienna.

How? Wait what’s going on?

I’ll explain later but now you gotta come with me.

You’re dead.

Yup.

But you’re somehow back.

Weird how life works or should I say the afterlife? she laughs.

I was so confused.

No? Too soon?

Ah yeah…so?

She started walking faster.

So…you brought me over to the other side.

I nodded.

For a reason perhaps? Well now it’s my turn.

I figured another reaper would take me- why you?

This world is collapsing, the veils are thinning. Haven’t you felt it? Apparently a reaper isn’t supposed to communicate with souls that have moved on but here we are.

The veils are thinning? So the rumors were true. I thought to myself. How is this even possible?

Maybe you’re the chosen one. She smiled. I’m kidding, you’re just the weird one.

Wouldn’t be the first one to tell me that.

After ducking various trees and trying to keep up in the dark, we were finally able to see some light again.

Mom! Got him!

Never doubted you Lily.

I peered through the door and saw it was some type of cottage. The living room had a welcoming air about it, and there standing was Sienna and her mother.

Come sit! Have you eaten today?

His breath smells like beer.

Lily, don’t be rude.

Lily, she called her. I guess it was a nickname she had.

The truth isn’t rude.

Her mother scoffed.

Am I truly dead?

Her mother looked at me odd. Dear child no- is that- LILY!

What? I didn’t say he was or wasn’t. He assumed and I went with it.

She sighed. No child you’re not. But something bigger is at play and we need all the help we can get.
